Reflections After Watching the Life of Ida B. Wells

This film presses on matters regarding Ida B. Wells. She was a crusader for justice and was involved in many pursuits that challenged lynching and its evilness as a whole. Throughout watching the film I found myself in awe of Ida B. Wells. It is true that she indeed had a passion for justice. Her justice was not only based on emotions but it was based on what was morally right, which is that you should not lynch another human being just for the color of their skin. Wells’ political strategizing is admirable and her investigative techniques were very interesting to watch play out. She was determined to continue meeting with powerful political figures in order to help the cause. Wells was radical in her own right as well. Wells was not the type of woman to sit down and be silent as chaos ensued around her. If anything, she helped carry the chaos. Although she went through many tribulations, she was still one to lend an arm to her fellow brethren. Ida B. Wells was bold as well, I did not know the extent to which she was so forthright and firm. Her thinking and way of being was based on getting justice and setting balance in society regarding African Americans, no matter the cost. “If it is treason for me to say so, you will have to make the most of it.” This quote stands out to me because it is essentially the bane of Wells’ life story. She was willing to risk so much for the cause of anti-lynching and one could even say that she dedicated her life to it. Even into her 60s she did not stop her crusade for justice, instead continuing her fire.

Wells left a legacy of service and dedication to her race and has left many people to be proud of her. Her perseverance and constant need to implement change can teach us all a thing or two about social justice reformation. When Wells suggested voluntary relationships between white women and black men, she set off ill feelings in many white people. Yet, she expected retaliation and was still hard set on standing on her word – gun in hand. I appreciated how this film delved into multiple aspects of Wells’ contributions to black society.

I haven’t see this film, or know as much on the life story as I probably should; but what I do know is that those who have made a difference have had to be brave and daring, and that same energy is embodied within you. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, and I’ll be staying tuned. 😎
